The Greek island hopping itinerary that actually works

Ask ten people to plan a first trip through the Greek islands and nine of them will land on the same route: Athens, then Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini. It is the most travelled island hopping itinerary in the Cyclades and there is a good reason for that. The crossings are short, the ferries are frequent, and the four islands are genuinely different from one another rather than four versions of the same postcard.

What each island is for

Mykonos is the loud one, and worth two nights rather than five. Naxos is the biggest, the greenest and the best value, with mountain villages and the finest food in the group. Paros sits between the two, smart without being frantic. Santorini closes the loop with the caldera, which is as good as everyone says and considerably busier than they admit.

How long it takes

Seven days is tight but possible. Ten is comfortable. The single most common mistake is treating a ferry day as a spare day, because it is not. A crossing plus two port transfers plus a hotel checkout eats the whole morning and most of the afternoon. Give each island a minimum of two nights or you will spend the holiday packing.

The mistake that ruins it

Booking a fast ferry on the same day as an international flight home. Greek ferries are reliable in good weather and cancelled outright in high wind, and the northerly meltemi blows hardest in July and August. Come back to Athens the night before you fly. It costs one hotel night and it removes the only genuine risk in the whole trip.
