Bespoke or a package: what actually changes in a Greece trip

Both of these work, and plenty of people have had a lovely time on a package. The real difference is not quality and it is not price. It is the order in which the decisions get made, and in Greece that order matters more than it does almost anywhere else.

What a package is good at

It removes the thinking. Someone has already picked the islands, the nights on each one and the hotels, and they have picked a combination that works, because it has run before. The dates are set, the price is on the page, and you can book it in ten minutes. If the shape they are selling happens to be the shape you want, that is genuinely a good outcome and there is no reason to overcomplicate it.

The catch is that the shape came first

A package has to be sellable to a few hundred people, so it is built around what fills reliably rather than around what a particular week needs. That is why you see three nights somewhere that deserves two, and two nights somewhere that deserves four. Nothing is wrong with any single piece. It is the proportions that belong to somebody else.

In Greece, the boats decide everything

This is the part that catches people out when they plan a Cyclades trip from scratch. The islands are not joined up the way a map suggests. Two islands can sit an hour apart and have no useful sailing between them on the day you want it, and a route that reads beautifully on paper can turn out to need a backtrack through Piraeus. Add the wind, which does not care about your booking, and the ferry timetable stops being a detail and becomes the frame the whole trip sits inside.

So we build it in order

Ferries and flights first, because they decide what is possible. Then hotels around them, chosen for where they put you. Then the days, and only then, because a day tour is easy to place once you know which morning you are actually free. Doing it in that order is unglamorous and it is the entire reason the week holds together when the wind gets up.

Nothing gets padded

The useful consequence of writing an itinerary for one group is that there is no brochure to fill. If two nights somewhere is the right answer, we say two nights. If you would be better spending the money on one exceptional hotel for three nights than three ordinary ones for six, we will say that too, even though it is the smaller sale.

How it is priced

Per trip, quoted once we know the shape of it, rather than per person off a rate card. The same route in May and in August are two different trips at two different prices, so any published figure would be wrong for almost everybody who read it. The quote includes the transfers, the entries and the moving parts, so it is the number you actually pay. There is no fee for the planning and no obligation at the end of it.

What we need to start

Less than people expect. Your dates, roughly how long, which places are already fixed in your head, how hard you want the days to work, and a sense of what you want the trip to be worth. We will tell you honestly what that buys in the season you are travelling, and if the answer is that your dates want a different route, you will hear that before you have paid anything.
